Date by the sea is a short story written by Dikla Sapir. It is a story on human experiences, feelings […]
Far away, in a distant land a few generations apart, a family was on the move, making its way from Spain to Italy. There, on a small village, it started plowing its roots.
Many years later, that family was on the move again, it immigrated to Israel and settled on a farm in the south where part of my life was beginning to form, and this is where my story begins.
Time passed and the boy turned into a young soldier. When his national service ended he started working away from his home, away from the farm he grew up on. A few years later he returned to the farm and started working with his father in the cowshed which he knew since he was ten years old and begun making his life on the farm with his parents and the rest of his family.
Days and years passed without changes or special incidents, he lived by himself as a “lone Wolf”, with no long term commitments or obligations and no family of his own. There was nothing on the horizon that might appear to disturb the routine of his life which was seemingly calm and uneventful, until tragedy struck.
During the course of his life, as he grew and changed into a man, one could have noticed that he lived a life of an “observer”, an introvert though quite intelligent and educated, but very quiet, maybe even easy to influence, as if his life was managed by his family and run by his work schedule without the slightest intervention on his part.
He attended to all his family’s needs and helped who ever asked for it but then, after completing all the chores of the day, he would retire to his den being the lone wolf that he was.
All seemed perfect with his way of life, there was no need for real change – work… family… work… some recreation… and “vice versa”. But the tragedy that hit him and his family has shaken the soul of my beloved man, the same tragedy that caused him to look again at his life and see it from a new perspective. No more being a bystander, no more letting life pass by but search for other options, different ways, better; to want something of his own, to create something meaningful and do his best to achieve it.
He started thinking of creating a family of his own and not through wishes and dreams but via a practical way, through a child of his own, a child who will give continuance, fulfillment and a different meaning to his life.
And then, without any expectations,
Opportunity for a change in his life “knocked” on his “doorstep”…
